yama-guri is a 15ml bottled fountain pen ink from Pilot's Iroshizuku line — a very dark, near-black brown named for the wild chestnut.

山栗 is the wild chestnut, and this is the deep brown of the shell rather than of coffee or of leather. It's dark enough to use anywhere you'd use black, with just enough warmth to keep it from reading cold on the page. A fine nib gives you something close to black, and a wet, broad nib opens it up into a clear brown where the ink has room to pool. This is the brown to reach for when black feels too severe.
