The Tomitaro Makino: Yamazakura graph notebook is an A5 grid notebook from Hobonichi, 288 pages of Tomoe River paper ruled in a 3.7 mm graph, with a cream cover carrying a black-and-white botanical plate of the yamazakura cherry and a deep burgundy cloth spine.

Dr. Tomitaro Makino is the father of Japanese botany. He drew this yamazakura — the mountain cherry — about 120 years ago, working under a microscope with a makie brush, and it opened his Flora Japonica in 1900. He chose the mountain cherry to stand for Japan. The cover is Plate I from the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden collection, reproduced with the original Latin caption still running along the bottom: Prunus Pseudo-Cerasus, Lindl. α. spontanea, Maxim.

The notebook opens completely flat, which matters more than it sounds like it does when you are writing across a spread. The grid is printed in four colors that change every 72 pages — red, then blue, then green, then purple — so you can find your way back to April without flipping through the whole book. Tomoe River paper takes shading and sheen the way you would want it to.

It fits a Hobonichi A5 cover, and it works just as well on its own.
