Article: Before You Buy a Fountain Pen

Before You Buy a Fountain Pen

Choosing a fountain pen is a personal experience. Writing feel, weight, nib size, and ink flow all affect how a pen performs in your hand. This quick guide will help you select confidently and avoid common mistakes before purchasing.

Fountain Pens Are Personal Writing Tools

Unlike disposable pens, fountain pens are precision writing instruments. Once inked or dipped, they are considered used and cannot be returned. We encourage thoughtful selection and are always happy to answer questions before you purchase.

Choosing a Nib Size

Nib size determines line width and writing feel.

  • Extra Fine (EF): Very fine line, ideal for small handwriting and planners

  • Fine (F): Most popular; smooth and controlled for everyday writing

  • Medium (M): Slightly broader, smoother feel with more ink flow

  • Broad (B): Bold line; best for larger handwriting and expressive writing

If you are unsure, Fine is typically the safest starting point.

Ink Flow & Paper Matter

Fountain pens perform best on fountain-pen-friendly paper. Very absorbent paper can cause:

  • feathering

  • bleed-through

  • dull ink appearance

For best results, use quality paper designed for fountain pen use.

First-Time Fountain Pen Users

If this is your first fountain pen:

  • Choose a Fine or Medium nib

  • Start with standard fountain pen ink

  • Avoid waterproof or shimmer inks until comfortable with cleaning

Manufacturer Variation

Each brand has its own writing feel and nib character. A Fine nib in one brand may feel different from another. This variation is part of the charm of fountain pens.
